MOVING 101
Not sure where to begin? Follow these steps to make your move seamless.
BOOK SERVICES
Book your moving company as soon as you know when moving day will be. This is of particular importance if you’re moving towards the end or beginning of the month. That’s a tremendously busy time – booking in advance is recommended!
CLEAR SCHEDULE
Make sure someone is available to coordinate your move. If possible, plan to move on a day when you have no appointments. If you work, schedule to take the day off.
GET ORGANIZED
Begin purging clutter. Moving is a fresh start and a terrific opportunity clear out items that you don’t need. Ask your moving company to dispose of unwanted furniture responsibly.
UPDATE ADDRESSES
Revise your address with your employer, bank, cell/cable provider and utility company to ensure you don’t miss payments. Consider arranging for Canada Post to forward your mail directly to your new home or office so you don’t miss any important correspondence.
BUY SUPPLIES
Have plenty of supplies like tape, bubble wrap, permanent markers and boxes.
START PACKING
Begin with items that you don’t use every day (e.g. books or speciality kitchen supplies). Aim to have everything packed a few days before your move. Keep a suitcase of essentials for the transition period.
LABEL
Save time by labeling your boxes so your movers can place them where they belong.
TAKE MEASUREMENTS
Know the dimensions of the door frames and rooms of your new home or office. This is particularly important if you’re downsizing. If your furniture won’t fit, consider selling it and getting more suitable items for your new digs.
Don’t Overlook!
If you’re moving in or out of an apartment/condo make sure you have a service elevator reserved for your movers. Having a designated elevator will save you a remarkable amount of time, thus money.
